Greenhouse gas emission factor for electricity generation and consumption
In response to growing business demands, the Green Transition Office has prepared a study on greenhouse gas emission factors for the production and consumption of electricity in Ukraine.
Establishing a unified methodological approGreenhouse gas emission factor for electricity generation and consumptionach for calculating national emission factors and identifying corresponding information sources for data collection will enable the regular publication of national emission factor indicators in open access. These indicators can then be used by all interested parties.
National emission factors can be utilized by businesses for various purposes, including:
- Determining the carbon footprint of products in line with the requirements of the Carbon Border Adjustment Mechanism (CBAM).
- Corporate greenhouse gas accounting under the GHG Protocol.
- Evaluating emission reductions resulting from investment projects.
Government authorities can use the study’s findings to assess the effectiveness of public policies aimed at reducing greenhouse gas emissions through energy efficiency measures, renewable energy development, and electrification.
It is noteworthy that Ukraine’s average electricity emission factors are close to the EU average (data for 2022). While the EU experienced an increase in specific emissions due to the gas market crisis, Ukraine saw a reduction, thereby narrowing the gap.
The study also includes several recommendations, such as:
- Approving an official methodology for calculating emission factors for electricity production and consumption.
- Improving data quality.
- Expanding the scope of calculations, including the integration of enterprise power plants and detailed statistics on their activities.
