In Kyiv, the results of COP29 were summarized, and the strategy for the next year was discussed
On December 11, the Ministry of Environmental Protection and Natural Resources of Ukraine hosted a forum titled "Ukraine at COP29: Achievements, Challenges, Prospects." This key event was dedicated to analyzing and summarizing the work of the Ukrainian delegation at this year’s UN Climate Change Conference (COP29). Participants discussed achievements, assessed challenges, and outlined strategic priorities for the future.
The forum brought together representatives from the government, businesses, civil society organizations, and international partners. The discussions focused on the outcomes of Ukraine’s delegation, which demonstrated its ability to influence global climate decisions even amid wartime challenges.
"Ukraine may not have the largest resources in the world, but we manage to achieve significant results in developing the green sector. It’s gratifying to see, and we must build on these achievements by effectively utilizing available opportunities," said Andrii Kitura, Development Director of DiXi Group and Head of the Green Transition Office.
A key highlight of the forum was the discussion on the presentation of the Long-Term Low Emission Development Strategy (LT-LEDS), showcasing the ambition and systematic approach of Ukraine’s climate policy. The strategy outlines the primary stages of Ukraine’s decarbonization, incorporating the interests of businesses and the public. According to Andrii Kitura, this strategy serves as a practical tool for attracting investments and strengthening international partnerships.
"Next year at COP, we aim to develop an even more ambitious and actionable program that will involve the government, businesses, and civil society in fulfilling Ukraine’s climate commitments," he emphasized.
Despite the successes, forum participants highlighted the need to address challenges in adapting climate policy to the realities of war. One major issue is the lack of structured coordination among the government, civil society organizations, and businesses. To address this, the Green Transition Office proposed creating a unified platform to systematize climate initiatives.
Participants agreed that the global outcomes of COP29 served as an important benchmark for Ukraine. Key lessons included the necessity of early preparation for international climate events, fostering opportunities for informal dialogue with partners, and ensuring Ukraine’s participation at all levels.
"We need to compile a list of actions, platforms, and key messages to communicate effectively. This will enable us to become more visible and influential on the global stage," suggested Andrii Kitura.
The forum also served as a platform for exchanging ideas and experiences. Discussions covered opportunities to utilize international support for implementing the Long-Term Low Emission Development Strategy and strengthening partnerships with other countries. Through this event, Ukraine reaffirmed its readiness to remain an active participant in the global climate dialogue.
