Experts Discussed "Decarbonization of Ukraine's Cement Industry: Challenges and Opportunities"
Ukraine's cement industry is one of the foundational sectors that ensures the country's economic and infrastructure development, and will play a crucial role in post-war reconstruction. At the same time, it is one of the most carbon-intensive industries, creating significant financial and competitive challenges for domestic cement producers under new conditions of strengthened carbon regulation.
This topic became the subject of discussion at the online event "Decarbonization of Ukraine's Cement Industry: Challenges and Opportunities," organized by DiXi Group in collaboration with the governments of Britain and Ukraine.
Opening the event, Oleksiy Ryabchyn, energy and climate expert, noted: "The issue of decarbonizing Ukraine's cement industry is something that is rarely mentioned or is not a priority. Therefore, it is important that we are raising this topic today. Thank you, colleagues." Andriy Kitura, Development Director of DiXi Group and Head of the Green Transition Office, substantiated the need to define a national carbon budget and outlined approaches to its development, highlighting the key role of sectoral decarbonization studies in assessing greenhouse gas emission reduction potential. His presentation outlined the Green Transition Office's plans to analyze the decarbonization potential of key sectors of Ukraine's economy, emphasizing the practical value of such work for evidence-based determination of national climate goals.
Vyacheslav Panov, General Manager for Green Transition Advisory Services, presented the general approach and main features of the methodology used by the Green Transition Office in developing sectoral decarbonization studies, the results of techno-economic modeling of decarbonization measures for dry and wet cement clinker production technologies, and the resulting indicators of specific cost of greenhouse gas emission reductions in the form of a Marginal Abatement Cost (MAC) curve.
The Green Transition Office emphasized the importance of collaboration among cement industry stakeholders – domestic cement companies, the industry association "Ukrtsement," government agencies involved in collecting and processing statistical data, and called for their joint work to improve the reliability and accuracy of industry data necessary for quality analysis and modeling of decarbonization measures for Ukraine's cement industry.
